Fine
grained volcanic ash combined with extreme metamorphic conditions
in the Lake District produced Kirkstone Silver Green Slate,
a beautiful unique stone which clearly shows the settlement
lines from volcanic eruptions of millions of years ago on
its hard and durable surface.
When Kirkstone Quarries were first contacted by Angela
Traill to provide
worktops for this project we were at pains to point out
that although this
was probably our most appealing material, it was also one
of the most
difficult to provide as a work top.
To maintain the consistent look of the tops it was necessary
to obtain
material from a single block of slate which would be slabbed
to create the
work surface. Because this stone is found in a fragmented
state on the
Cumbrian hills, 95% of everything which is quarried is waste,
and most of
what is left is only big enough for tile. Finding a block
which would
provide the necessary area is always a major undertaking.
However, after a
two month search the necessary material was found, and 30mm
slabs were
created from the block acquired.
Kirkstones masons then cut the material to size, and applied
cut outs for
sinks and edge detailing, using years of experience to work
with the
material, and sympathetically position this highly patterned
stone so that
adjoining parts of the work top complimented each other.
Because of the limitations surrounding material supply relatively
few Silver
Green work tops are manufactured per year. The Threshing
Barn is a great
example of what can be achieved with this unique product.
Kirkstone quarry and sell tiles and worktops in Silver Green,
Sea Green and
Brathay Black slate in the Lake District. We also import
and distribute a
broad range of Limestone's, Slates, Granites and Glass products
from all
over the world.
